SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The bilingual parent liaisons will act as connectors with the parents of bilingual students (preschool-grade 12) in ways that not only serve to build relationships with the schools but also support students’ academic success. These responsibilities will fall under the supervision of the Director, Diversity Equity and Inclusion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Design, plan and facilitate parent activities that educate parents about the United States school system, specifically Evergreen Public Schools, and miscellaneous school policies/procedures, e.g. attendance, state testing, state and district curriculum expectations and assessments.
- Assist and interpret in parent conferences, as well as, school, district-wide and community events, when needed.
- Work in coordination with EPS Translators on the development and translation of selected district documents.
- Design and provide learning opportunities for teachers and other district staff to increase awareness of cultural and linguistic information related to the particular language groups.
- Advise and consult with other district personnel (e.g. school psychologists, counselors, school administrators, student study team members) on multilingual students of academic and social concern.
- Regularly monitor and respond to messages on the district liaison phone message line.
- Encourage parent volunteerism in schools through coordination of the Evergreen Public Schools’ Parents as Natural Leaders Program and the formation of other school or district parent leadership groups. This includes the development of curriculum and modules for parent trainings and leadership programs.
- When needed, educate parents about and connect them with available community resources including, but not limited to, the EPS Family and Community Resources Centers, community counseling, and health resources. This includes outreach to services for families in crisis and partnering with the district liaison for students in transition or transitional student/family coordinator.
- Organize student groups and coordinate participation at leadership events or fairs designed to support multilingual students toward academic and social success.
- Collaborate with Multilingual Program Coordinators and parents to ensure appropriate placement of students in relevant programs, such as Dual Immersion and Newcomers.
- Provide district/school information to the extended language communities, e.g. churches, businesses.
- Maintain a flexible schedule which includes attending a variety of evening and weekend events at EPS schools throughout the year.
- Keep an ongoing record of activities and parent participation to track program effectiveness.
- Report regularly to Director, Diversity Equity and Inclusion.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT NECESSARY:
Computer/Laptop, typewriter, telephone, copy machines, and all other tools and equipment necessary to perform the essential functions as listed above.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Interpreter certification through an accredited institution or certification through the American Translators Association will be required. The translation/interpretation training coursework must be completed within twelve months after hire.
- Advanced knowledge of secondary language, including educational terms, phrases, and acronyms. Intermediate knowledge of intercultural communication including socio-linguistic diversity and variance.
- Evidences ability to fluently speak, read, and write in secondary language specified in posting through district assessment (prior to hire). Proficient English language skills also required.,
- Demonstrated successful experience working with multilingual parents and families.
- Preferred successful experience as an instructional paraeducator with multilingual students.
- Demonstrates ability to work productively without immediate supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a team player.
- Able to initiate, organize and carryout events and activities for multilingual parents and students.
- Relates well with multilingual students and parents, as well as, district administrators and other district staff.
- Can proficiently translate written documents from English into preferred language and preferred language into English.
